Becoming a Volunteer
- Attention, new volunteers! Because the security of our students is critical to the district, all volunteer applicants undergo a background check before serving in our schools. In the past, the district has been able to assume the burden of that cost, but recent budget constraints now prevent that. Beginning in 2009-10, first time volunteer applicants will pay a one-time, non-refundable fee of $25 for a Florida Department of Law Enforcement background check. Payment must be in the form of a money order, cashier’s check, or a personal check and brought to the school where the application will be submitted. Some criminal charges can prevent applicants from being approved and are listed on the volunteer application, so that individuals can determine if approval is possible. **Active and sworn law enforcement officers with arresting power, current / retiring PCPS employees, active Kelly substitute teachers, registered PCPS students and college students majoring in Education are EXEMPT from paying the $25.00 background check fee. Attach a copy of verifying documentation such as an officer photo ID badge and member number OR an employee / student ID badge.
- Volunteer approval is continuous from year to year and is applicable at all Polk County Public Schools.
- Volunteer applications can be completed in person at NLE. For information on the status of your application, contact North Lakeland Elementary. Once approved, call the school to receive an orientation and start volunteering!
